SFGate journalist Andrea Abney recently asked San Francisco Chronicle music critic Joshua Kosman how he reacted the first time he heard Derek Bermel’s music. “I was serving on the jury panel for an arts award…When I started listening to the scores [Bermel] submitted, I was just knocked out by how inventive, imaginative and technically assured they were. When the jury met later to deliberate…I said, ‘…Can’t we just give him the prize…?”
