John Pitcher of Nashville Scene reviews Richard Danielpour’s newest Naxos CD: the Nashville Symphony’s world premiere recordings of Darkness in the Ancient Valley, A Woman’s Life, and Lacrimae Beati. Giancarlo Guerrero conducts, joined by soprano soloists Angela Brown and Hila Plitmann.
Pitcher calls Darkness in the Ancient Valley “…Mahlerian in its scope and ambition…colorful, dramatic….[and] rhythmically vital music.” He describes Lacrimae Beati as “achingly beautiful.” While reviewing A Woman’s Life – based on poetry by Maya Angelou – Pitcher notes “soprano Angela Brown inhabits each song.”
Pitcher continues, “The NSO has won seven Grammy Awards for its recordings of contemporary American music. This new Danielpour album may well be the orchestra’s best recording yet.”
