Jaap van Zweden conducted the New York premiere of Julia Adolphe’s “Unearth, Release,” a viola concerto commissioned by the Philharmonic and the League of American Orchestras for Cynthia Phelps, Ms. Phelps conveyed the emotional nuances and mood shifts of the music in a commanding and plush-toned performance.
It’s possible to hear chamber music in some pretty unorthodox settings these days, but few blend the intimacy of the concert hall with the expansive freedom of the outdoors as well as this Utah festival.

Highlights of the last movement were Phelps’ gorgeous playing of some high harmonics as well as duets with a muted trumpet and an English horn.
