Kernis’s comes to DSO for flute concerto premiere as one of most celebrated composers of his generation

This week the DSO gives the world premiere of Aaron Jay Kernis’ Concerto for Flute and Orchestra with soloist Marina Piccinini. Once a wunderkind, Kernis, now 56, comes to the DSO as one of the most celebrated composers of his generation, having won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998.

Cynthia Phelps with the Eastern Music Festival orchestra

Julia Adolphe’s concerto for Cynthia Phelps received its premiere in advance of the New York Philharmonic performance at the Eastern Music Festival. Highlights of the last movement were Phelps’ gorgeous playing of some high harmonics as well as duets with a muted trumpet and an English horn.  The writer commented he hopes it gets recorded by Phelps as soloist
