Along with two of the most popular works in the repertory, this disc offers two of Gershwin’s lesser-known but most fascinating works–the Second Rhapsody, an often haunting, far more seriously crafted work than the one in Blue, and the clever miniature set of variations. The disc contains Ferde Grofé’s third orchestration of Rhapsody in Blue, for “theater orchestra.” It is similar to the original for the Whiteman Band but stronger-sounding and not as overblown as the one for symphony orchestra. Boriskin is a fluent pianist, and his work with Sheffer and the virtuosic Eos players is beautifully integrated. The concerto is treated with welcome lightness, and the recorded sound is excellent throughout. –Paul Turok
