The Firebird can bring both good luck and misfortune and is an accurate reflection of the complex Russian spirit. The suite taken from the famous ballet that made Stravinsky’s name goes through every mood—from the serenely calm to the terrifyingly impetuous—to tell this Slavic folk tale. Respighi’s lyric poem Il Tramonto (“the sunset”), here sung by Sasha Cooke, immerses us, in true Italian fashion, in the tragic twilight of a love story. The mezzo-soprano also performs Pierre Jalbert’s eloquent From Dusk to Starry Night (2015): short melodies that embody the bliss and beauty of the night as well as its terror.
