The soloist was <a href=\"http:\/\/nyphil.org\/about-us\/artists\/cynthia-phelps\">Cynthia Phelps<\/a>, the Philharmonic\u2019s impressive principal violist, who played the world premiere of the concerto this summer in North Carolina. (The score performed on Thursday is a revised version.)<\/p>\n<p>A New York native, Ms. Adolphe, 28, takes an unconventional approach to the concerto genre in \u201cUnearth, Release.\u201d As she writes in a composer\u2019s note, the relationship between the viola and the orchestra \u201ctransforms\u201d over this 19-minute work\u2019s three movements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Phelps conveyed the emotional nuances and mood shifts of the music in a commanding and plush-toned performance.
