\u201cLate Night With Leonard Bernstein,\u201d a look at the after-hours maestro, which opened the 2011-12 season in the\u00a0Copland House\u00a0concert series.<\/p>\n

Whether Bernstein cleared any rooms was beside the point. Ms. Bernstein\u2019s story revealed his mischievous personality and musical predilections, and that was enough to engage the packed opening-night crowd. After the pianist\u00a0Michael Boriskin\u00a0attacked the variations with the kind of gusto Bernstein was known for, the audience filled the music room at the\u00a0Merestead estate\u00a0in Mount Kisco with lusty laughs and applause \u2014 much as Bernstein\u2019s merrymakers might have done.<\/p>\n

Mr. Boriskin, the artistic and executive director of Copland House, said the concert series there, now in its third season, was tailored to an audience \u201cfor whom the sense of adventure and discovery is important to their musical experiences.\u201d\u00a0As the program unfolded, the performers\u2019 small asides, fleeting smiles and tears \u2014 Ms. Bernstein\u2019s eyes welled up at the sight of her father on screen \u2014 were clear to most of the audience. The Merestead space \u2014 a former living room, smaller than Lincoln Center\u2019s\u00a0Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse, where the show was first staged last fall \u2014 has an intimacy that Ms. Bernstein said marked it as \u201cideal\u201d for a program that peeks into her father\u2019s home, and head.<\/p>\n
