Texts deal\u00a0with human access to spirituality (Hildegard<br \/>\nvon Bingen, Ryokan, Runi, and Psalms 1 and\u00a0131, the latter for Bernstein, with an appropriate\u00a0Mahlerian touch. Kernis\u2019s romantic settings,<br \/>\nof the Psalms in particular, are gorgeous\u00a0and sublimely moving.<\/p>\n<p><em>Valentines<\/em> is dedicated to his\u00a0teacher at Yale, Jacob Druckman. Texts are by\u00a0Scottish poet Carol Ann Duffy. These settings<br \/>\nare written in a style similar to his mentor\u2019s\u00a0academic modernism, with his often somewhat\u00a0romantic shadings, buttery angularity<br \/>\nand spooky lyricism, occasional violence,\u00a0eroticism, and loneliness. One of the numbers\u00a0is what amounts to an operatic scene, about<br \/>\nbreaking up and leaving. It is effective in its\u00a0way. Two Songs: <em>Love and Spirit<\/em>, with\u00a0texts by contemporary poet Alexandra Villard\u00a0de Borchgrave, deal with hope and spirit following 9\/11. These are expressive in Kernis\u2019s\u00a0most intimate vein.
