Jamie Bernstein\u2019s family album just happens to be more musical than most.<\/p>\n<p>Lights down, soundtrack up: Leonard Bernstein and Michael Tilson Thomas jousting for elbow room while playing a four-hand \u201cThe Rite of Spring.\u201d Bernstein\u2019s voice on a piece of 78 rpm acetate, sending a message to Jerome Robbins about progress on a new work and apologizing for the sloppy playing. Here\u2019s one of his favorite tunes, Noel Coward\u2019s \u201cIf Love Were All,\u201d performed live and quite movingly by pianist John Musto and soprano Amy Burton.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Bernstein summons forces musical and archival in\u00a0<em>Late Night with Leonard Bernstein,<\/em>\u00a0which made a one-night-only appearance (and ran not so late) Saturday at the\u00a0National Museum of American Jewish History\u00a0on Independence Mall. The script by Bernstein\u2019s daughter and George Steel (the show is produced by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coplandhouse.org\/\">Copland House<\/a>) isn\u2019t linear biography or musicological investigation. More of a musical s\u00e9ance, it\u2019s probably the most\u00a0<em>haimisch<\/em>\u00a0two hours (to borrow from the Yiddish for \u201chomey\u201d) anyone will spend in the presence of the composer-conductor-musical explainer this centenary year.<\/p>\n<p>The show ends with \u201cSome Other Time\u201d from\u00a0<em>On the Town<\/em>, which, after all we\u2019ve heard and learned, arrives like a moment of distillation. Musto, Boriskin and Burton gave it a marvelous sense of tranquility and unwinding. But it\u2019s also a piece about grappling with unfinished business in life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh well, we\u2019ll catch up some other time,\u201d says the lyric.
