So when you program a Glass violin concerto \u2014 as the Pittsburgh Symphony, conducted by Christopher Ko\u00adnig, did Friday night at Heinz Hall \u2014 you can\u2019t do much better than tasking Mr. Fain with its in\u00adter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion. His assignment was Glass\u2019 Vi\u00adolin Con\u00adcerto No. 2, \u201cThe Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Four Sea\u00adsons,\u201d a 2009 update of Vi\u00advaldi\u2019s name\u00adsake con\u00adcerti. Be\u00adfore Fri\u00adday, the PSO had never played a Glass piece on its clas\u00adsi\u00adcal sub\u00adscrip\u00adtion se\u00adries.<\/p>\n<p>In his PSO debut, Mr. Fain offered the piece\u2019s almost Romantic melodies with a mellow, ribbon-like tone. His quiet, un\u00adsen\u00adti\u00admen\u00adtal take on the main theme of the second movement carried that melody like a breeze. A heaving vibrato closed the movement, puncturing its early triumph with sobs.
