It’s possible to hear chamber music in some pretty unorthodox settings these days, but few blend the intimacy of the concert hall with the expansive freedom of the outdoors as well as this Utah festival.

Julia Adolphe’s concerto for Cynthia Phelps received its premiere in advance of the New York Philharmonic performance at the Eastern Music Festival. Highlights of the last movement were Phelps’ gorgeous playing of some high harmonics as well as duets with a muted trumpet and an English horn. Moab Music Festival, which takes place in the town of Moab, Utah, wins the title for coolest outdoor fest around.

Pierre Jalbert’s In Aeternam received it’s Washington DC premiere at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony under the baton of Cristian Măcelaru.
