The highlight of Bell and Haywood’s evening was Aaron Jay Kernis’s “Air” for Violin and Piano, commissioned by Bell himself in 1995. The abstract, heartbreakingly beautiful piece is both love song and exploration of intense emotion, and it was a treat to hear it.
The New York Philharmonic announces the formation of the New York Philharmonic String Quartet, comprising Concertmaster Frank Huang, Principal Associate Concertmaster Sheryl Staples, Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps, and Principal Cello Carter Brey.
“…I’ll wear the greatest gown ever,” shared violist Cynthia Phelps, when Laurence Vittes of Strings Magazine asked her how she’d handle being in New York’s intense classical-music spotlight when she premiered Julia Adolph’s Viola Concerto with the New York Philharmonic.
